Raiders Conclude OTAs Week 2

The Oakland Raiders finished up their second week of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) at their Alameda practice facility. The team has one more set of OTAs next week followed by a mandatory three-day mini-camp.

Offense, defense and special teams continued to make progress during OTAs Week 2. “I think it went well,” said FB Marcel Reece. “I think the way it got better from last week is just everyone getting more familiar with each other and having a little more fun. Just being more comfortable with the systems and the different players and the different coaches.”

The team improved after getting back into the swing of things on the football field Week 1. “Week 2 was good,” said CB Chimdi Chekwa. “Got all the rust off. Guys got better. I think we took a lot of strides coming together more as a team, so it was a good week.”

Chekwa had the opportunity to begin working with veteran defensive back Charles Woodson. “It’s going well,” said Chekwa. “He’s definitely a future Hall of Famer, a guy that I watched play growing up. Back before I went to Ohio State I watched Michigan. Now, not so much, but he’s going to be a great addition to the defense and a guy to look up to and learn from.”

Because of all of the new editions to the defense, the players are working on getting to know each other and developing chemistry. Chekwa believes they are gelling together nicely. “I think it’s really coming along,” said Chekwa. “We’ve got everybody here at OTAs on the defense so that’s a great thing. Guys are coming along real well, coming together. It’s difficult when you have such a new-look defense, a whole bunch of new parts coming in, but I think we’re doing well.”

TE David Ausberry can tell that the offensive side of the ball is improving as well. “I think anytime you’re getting work done, you’re getting better,” said Ausberry. “A few mistakes, a few things we need to get cleared up, but I think everything is getting better and doing what we can to build a foundation.”

That foundation relies on the rookies catching on and developing throughout the off-season. “I think the rookies are doing real good,” said Chekwa. “Just like every year, they kind of need to get acclimated to the whole system and the way things go. Their schedule is a little longer than ours but I think they’re doing real good.”

Reece can see the rookies picking up the system better than during Week 1. “I think they are getting faster,” said Reece. “I think they’re making quicker adjustments. I think they’re getting more comfortable with themselves and everyone is learning at the same time so it’s a good atmosphere for everybody.”

Now the Silver and Black head into their final week of OTAs. “Another week to get better,” said Chekwa. “This is an opportunity for everybody to get prepared for real football because we’re not out here hitting or anything. Take this as a week to get better going into mini-camp and then from there continue getting better going into the preseason.”
